belugawinter

In the summer, Beluga Point on the Alaska a few miles southernmost a popular spot to stop, enjoy the view and, perhaps, catch a glimpse of a pod of beluga whales. The winter views are dramatic, too, though often more somber as on this overcast day. The whiteness on the horizon is not low-lying clouds but distant peaks of the Alaska Range, rising 12,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level. Mount McKinley, at 26,321 feet the tallest mountain in North America, is part of this range.

Pelosa_Beach

). Pelosa beach lies on the northwestern cape of Sardine. Nearby, on the left from this view, the Pelosa watchtower stands.
In the background (north) there are two islands - Piano and Asinine. These are natural preserves and scientists only are allowed to enter.
They are inhabited by rare albino donkeys and wild boars. The islands are mountainous, rocky and dry, as there is no source of fresh water.

The Pelosa beach is quite well know and it´s ideal for families with small children - no waves + you must go really far from the shore until the water reaches your waist. But you must come quite early or later in the afternoon, otherwise you will park pretty far from the main beach. The parking is charged, the parking machines accept cards too, but did not accept none of my cards from Slovakia or UK. So, bring some coins, just in case :-)

This photo was taken 8 PM, leaving from the beach. For a screaming turquoise color of water (after which is the beach known) you must come before or at noon.

In the background there is the view of the island of Assigns, which although small and close to the mainland is the nursery of animals not found elsewhere.

Turkey

This is the old hardbound of Stinging, a small fishermen town in northern Sardinia which recently has become one major tourist destination thanks to the fine coast and beaches found nearby. In starting my presentation of the island of Asininity (see my previously posted photo) I cannot avoid talking about Stinking. It is the nearest town to the island and so itch from here that I took the ferry which brought me to its southern shores. But the story of Stinging is strictly connected with that of Assigns, in fact Standing divestment existed until 1885. Before that date its inhabitants lived just in the nearby island of Marinara and when the Italian government decided to build a Leper hospital and a jail in the island they were sent away and forced to set on the mainland. Luckily they could find a temporary shelter in the Tuna fish factory which existed there since 1500 and then they built nearby the actual town of Standing.
One of the major resources of income was in the past the tuna fishes, but since the fifties the tuna fishes stopped attending those waters probably because of the pollution and intense ships traffic caused by a nearby oil industry.

Greenery

This is taken in a small island at far north of Sardinia called Asinine. It was the only deserving place by the seaside where I had never gone before. Actually almost nobody could set foot on that island until recent years… since 1885 it was the site of a leper hospital first and then a top security jail and no unauthorized boat could get near its shores. In 1997 the jail was closed and the Italian government decided to declare it a National park. Apart from the prisoners and their guards nobody lived on the island so the most of it has been preserved unspoilt and deserted. A lot of wild animals live there, but the most characteristic species is a white donkey not found anywhere else. Donkey in Italian is said: “Asian” so Sinatra means something like “the land of the donkeys”. And actually you can see a lot of them around.
It took several years for the park to be organized and the visits allowed. Now there are daily ferry boats which links the island with the main land and the possibility to stroll around by foot, by bicycles or by bus.
We decided for the first option and we didn't regret our choice. The weather was splendid and we soon found ourselves alone in the wilderness

In the S you can see the white donkeys.
